Hello and welcome to my site. I hope you all survived your Junior year. It was a challenging year dealing with the COVID 19 pandemic and Virtual Learning. Hopefully, we will not have to deal with that again this year. Now it's time to get ready for your most important year (to date), being a Senior At Coral Springs High School. My name is Mr. Gofus. Some know me as Mr. G or Coach G. I was the Boy's soccer coach at Coral Springs HS, and now am the assistant coach helping out with the boy's team. This will be my 15th year teaching.
Just a quick note about my background so you have a feel for who I am. This is my second or third career.... I can't keep track anymore :-) I served two and a half years as an officer in the Army, during the Vietnam War era, spending one year overseas after graduating from college. I started my career in the federal government as a special agent with the Treasury Department, working as a field special agent, supervisory special agent and special-agent-in-charge. Later in my career, I was selected as an executive with the Internal Revenue Service and managed both the criminal and civil functions. I have moved many times during my career and have experienced working in a bureaucracy first hand. I have spent time in Washington, D.C. among other places and have dealt directly with some of the very people we will be studying about. I hope my experiences in government will be positive supplement to the AP Government class.
I also worked in the private sector after my retirement from the government. I was the Chief Operating Officer for a manufacturing company headquartered in Miami, Florida. My experience in the private sector also included owning my own consulting business where I represented individuals before the Internal Revenue Service on civil and criminal matters as an Enrolled Agent. In my spare time I am involved in other activities that those who take my Personal Financial Literacy class will learn about.
So here we are.... At the starting gate of your senior year. As in sports, players must warm up before playing the game. In preparing for your AP Government class, students must also warm up so that they are ready to learn and absorb all that will be provided. The course is challenging, requiring total commitment, and the desire to go beyond what is expected of a regular student. Because you ARE NOT just a regular student! You are the best of the best and my job is to make you better and more prepared for college and your future.
Get yourself a thick notebook and an inquisitive mind. Read to understand, ask questions and challenge yourself. Almost all of the concepts we talk about, vocabulary words, and the articles and cases you will be reading have been on prior AP exams, and very well may be on the one you will be taking next May. The goal is that everyone passes the AP Exam next spring. The test is challenging because of the amount of material that is covered.
PASS the AP Exam
Remember: * What one knows does not necessarily mean that one understands what they know; One must first understand what they know before they can truly know what they understand....
